Featuring Eric Genuis will be both a pleasure, and somewhat of a departure from the type of artist we normally feature in this series. We normally feature Christian musicians. That’s not changing. Eric is a devout Catholic. We normally feature rock or pop musicians and that’s where the departure lies. Eric Genuis is a composer, virtuoso pianist and acclaimed performer.
Eric Genuis in Concert
I recently had the good fortune to see Eric perform in the most intimate of settings when my wife and I, along with our son, attended a benefit concert in our friends home. This was our first time experiencing a concert in a home, and to say it was treat is a gross understatement. This was an exhilarating and fascinating experience from the first note to the bitter end. Thrilling, passionate, emotional, these are some of the words that come to mind. Eric Genuis, along with Vyacheslav Drobushkin, Cellist, Brian Bak, Violinist and Amanda Kingston, a most gifted vocalist, performed to a captivated audience, mesmerized at every moment.
The Beauty of the Music
Beauty is a word that seemed to be the theme of the day as I listened to both the music as well as Eric’s words throughout the concert. He spoke of how little work there is for accomplished musicians of this caliber, musicians that can play on any stage in any orchestra, anywhere in the world, and yet, there is no shortage of work for musicians less talented playing and performing more popular forms of entertainment. He and I spoke before the concert and while we both agreed there is a need and a place for pop music, there should also be a balance. “This music moves the soul in a deeper more meaningful way” he explained, “it has power, that is, beauty in all its simplicity – it evokes a sense of hope.” Genuis, who plays to prison audiences throughout the year tells of an inmate once saying, “I forgot what hope sounded like” and another saying, “I’ve been in prison most of my life, this almost made it all worth it.” In a sense, I experienced the same thing. In a world filled with so much ugliness and mediocre entertainment at best, this was such a breath of fresh air. I felt alive in a way I can hardly articulate. It was a feeling of emotion on a higher level than I usually enjoy, and I listen to a variety of music and with a lot of gusto. This music is in a league of its own.
The Choice to Feature Eric Genuis
It didn’t occur to me to feature Eric here in this blog at first and then it hit me like a ton of bricks. This is the perfect place to feature Eric Genius. His music is very Christian, he composes pieces that not only have the beauty that evokes the Divine, but also composes pieces that are deliberately Christian – like a composition set to a St. Thomas Aquinas poem, Panis Angelicus. After all, music like the music Eric composes is the perfect departure from the everyday to bring a much-needed balance. Please, enjoy and share the blessing of this timeless beauty.
